JOYBUBBLES is a documentary about Joe Engressia (1949–2007), later known as Joybubbles. Born blind and yearning for connection, Joybubbles discovered he could hack into the analog telephone system by whistling a magic tone. This extraordinary breakthrough unlocked a hidden world and placed him at the center of an underground movement of telephone hackers. In the 1960s and ’70s, this group of hackers, the “phone phreaks,” infiltrated and explored the telephone network, long before personal computers and the internet. Joybubbles’ involvement in this subculture helped shape the future of hacking and technology. This documentary follows Joybubbles’ life chronologically, telling the story not only of his place in the history of tech, but of his lifelong search for connection as he confronts systemic ableism, navigates childhood trauma and isolation, and finds unconventional ways to subvert systems, and ultimately create community and find joy.
